Calicia's Weight Loss Story

Jun 6, 2019

Reversing a lifetime of weight gain in just a few months

Calicia Landry, bariatric patient

"I went from losing my breath walking up three steps to running, biking and swimming laps."

"Up until a few years ago, I never knew what it felt like to wear single-digit clothing," Calicia Landry says. "As a child I went from juniors' clothing straight to adult sizes, then to clothes for plus-sized women. Eventually I found myself wearing sweatpants every day."

Calicia's lifelong struggles with her weight caused her to live in a vicious eating cycle.

"I would eat unhealthy foods, then feel depressed about what I was eating, and the depression would lead me to eat even more," she says. "I finally decided I had enough."

Calicia's primary doctor was on the verge of starting her on diabetes treatment, but suggested she try bariatric weight loss surgery instead. He referred her to Hialeah Hospital.

"After being greeted by the friendly staff and getting a tour of the hospital's Center for Weight Loss Surgery, I felt at ease," she says. "Soon I was ready to have the surgery."

The laparoscopic procedure Calicia received is fairly simple, and she was able to stand up and move around within just a few hours.

"I was able to walk around the entire floor with minimal pain," she says. "I spent only a few days in the hospital, went home on a Friday, and by the following Monday, I was back at work."

After the surgery, the weight fell off quickly, which gave Calicia the motivation she needed to keep it from coming back.

"Now I try to run between 15 and 20 miles a week and have even competed in triathlons and 5K races," she says. "I went from losing my breath walking up three steps to running, biking and swimming laps."

So far Calicia has lost 180 pounds and dropped from a size 30 to a size 6.

"I would highly recommend visiting the Center for Weight Loss Surgery at Hialeah Hospital," she says. "Do it for yourself. If you make yourself happy, the rest will follow."
