Christina's Weight Loss Story

Bariatric surgery changes more than just physical appearance

Christina Ruiz, bariatric patient

christina-ruizAt 29 years old, Christina Ruiz suffered from depression and other mental disorders that resulted in gradual weight gain.

“I would eat whatever, watch TV all day and didn’t care about what I wore,” she says. “I was 366 lbs. and had given up on life.”

Christina knew she needed to make a change, so she saw a dietician to help her start a healthy diet plan. Instead, she was told she would be a perfect candidate for weight loss surgery. She went to her primary care physician for more information and was then referred to Dr. Raul Mederos, a bariatric surgeon on the medical staff at Hialeah Hospital’s Center for Weight Loss Surgery.

After going over her options, Dr. Mederos and Christina agreed that the gastric sleeve procedure would be the best fit for her. Just before Thanksgiving, she underwent the surgery and only spent one night at Hialeah Hospital before she was able to go home.

“The recovery was challenging, but nothing I couldn’t handle,” Christina says. “I had strict diet restrictions in the beginning, which was tough around the holidays, and had to sleep on my back for about a week.”

The doctor told her she would lose about 100 lbs. in a year. Yet, it has been only 8 months, and she has already lost 121 lbs. She is also down 10 pant sizes and 2.5 shoe sizes!

Christina says her life has changed, not only physically, but in other aspects as well.

“I’m not like I used to be at all,” she says. “I take care of myself, and people even tell me that I carry myself differently.”

Her newfound confidence and lifestyle has also led to a new relationship. The former couch potato wakes up at 5 a.m. every morning to hit the gym, so she’ll have the rest of the day to be active and enjoy spending time with her boyfriend.

“The surgery saved my life,” Christina says. “My entire mentality has changed. I look better, I feel better, and I don’t think there’s anything I can’t do.”

This testimonial reflects results achieved by this patient. As each case must be independently evaluated and managed, actual weight loss will vary. This surgery is designed for those with a body mass index equal to or greater than 40, or equal to or greater than 35 with serious co-morbidities.
