Hialeah Hospital Achieves National Accreditation for Bariatric Program

Feb 17, 2020

Hialeah, Fla. (February 11, 2016) Patients with severe obesity now have the option to receive surgical treatment at a nationally accredited bariatric program. Hialeah Hospital’s Center for Weight Loss Surgery has been designated by the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP) as a Comprehensive Bariatric Center for meeting the highest standards of patient safety and quality care.

“I would like to congratulate our medical director, Dr. Werner Andrade, and our bariatric team for this well-deserved recognition,” said Ben A. Rodriguez, CEO of Hialeah Hospital. “This achievement is the result of their tireless efforts to provide our weight loss patients with a high level of commitment and care.”

To earn the MBSAQIP accreditation, Hialeah Hospital’s program met essential criteria for staffing, training and facility infrastructure and care protocols, ensuring its ability to support patients with severe obesity. The MBSAQIP standards guarantee that bariatric surgical patients receive a multidisciplinary program, not just a surgical procedure, which improves patient outcomes and long-term success. Accredited centers offer preoperative and postoperative care designed specifically for severely obese patients.

In the United States, about 15.5 million people suffer from severe obesity, according to the National Institutes of Health. Obesity increases the risk of morbidity and mortality because of the diseases and conditions that are commonly associated with it, such as type II diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease, among others. Metabolic and bariatric surgical procedures have proven to be effective in the reduction of comorbid conditions related to severe obesity.
