Advanced Neuroscience Network Hospitals Recognized for Reducing Long-term Effects in Stroke PatientsOct 14, 2015
Miami Dade County, Fla (October 14, 2015) – Three of Tenet Healthcare’s Miami-Dade hospitals earn recognition as part of a proclamation presented by the county’s board of commissioners. October 6 was officially proclaimed “Stroke Consortium Day” to thank hospitals and EMS stations for collaborating in their efforts to reduce the number of patients with long-lasting effects following a stroke. Hialeah Hospital, North Shore Medical Center and Palmetto General Hospital, all of which are part of the Advanced Neuroscience Network (ANN), had members from their stroke teams attend the presentation.
“When a stroke occurs, the longer treatment is delayed the more damage is inflicted on the brain, which means time saved is brain saved,” said Dr. Ritesh Kaushal, medical director of Palmetto General Hospital’s Comprehensive Stroke Center. “While our stroke teams constantly work to help ensure prompt medical intervention, we must also acknowledge the critical role first responders play in delivering swift treatment.”
Palmetto General Hospital is designated as a Comprehensive Stroke Center by the state of Florida, while North Shore Medical Center and Hialeah Hospital are both designated as Primary Stroke Centers. Each center is committed to meeting specific standards of care for stroke patients.
As a Comprehensive Stroke Center, Palmetto General Hospital provides a higher level of care for qualified stroke patients. Using advanced technology and expertise, the hospital is equipped to quickly remove a blood clot obstructing blood flow to the brain, which causes greater damage the longer it is left untreated. The American Stroke Association recommends that patients receive tPA treatment for an ischemic stroke within 60 minutes of their arrival. This is called the “door-to-needle” time. Under the leadership of Dr. Kaushal, Palmetto General Hospital has been able to treat stroke patients twice as fast as other area hospitals.
Palmetto General Hospital was also recently recognized with the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Gold Quality Achievement Award with Target: StrokeSM Honor Roll Elite Plus. Earlier this year, Hialeah Hospital earned the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award. These awards further prove the hospitals’ commitment to generating positive outcomes for individuals who suffer strokes.
As the leading cause of adult disability in the United States, stroke is the fifth most common cause of death. When treating a stroke, every minute counts, not only for survival, but also to help reduce debilitating effects. Every minute left untreated, a stroke patient loses 1.9 million neurons. Because of this fast-moving progress, it is important that people are able to quickly recognize the signs of a stroke and get to the appropriate hospital for evaluation and treatment as soon as possible.
