Neurologists Welcomed By Hialeah

HIALEAH, FL  – Hialeah Hospital and Coral Gables Hospital have added two new neurologists, Dr. Elizabeth Garcia and Dr. Enrique A. Serrano to their medical team.

Dr. Garcia joins both hospitals working as a neurologist. Dr. Garcia was born and raised in Puerto Rico. After completing a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry, she entered the medical school at the University of Puerto Rico. She received her M.D. in 1999 and was commissioned as a Captain in the U.S. Army.

Dr. Garcia was assigned to Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Washington, where she completed her internship and residency in neurology and received a promotion to the grade of Major in the U.S. Army.

She practiced as a general neurologist at Eisenhower Army Medical Center in Augusta, Georgia from 2003 to 2006. After her honorable discharge from the Army in 2006, Dr. Garcia completed a year-long fellowship in her subspecialty of Neurophysiology at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, Georgia.

During that period she concentrated on neuromuscular diseases or illnesses that affect the muscles and the nerves. She has special interests in the treatment of headaches, multiple sclerosis, strokes, Alzheimer’s and neuropathies. She performs therapeutic Botox injections, electromyography exams, and nerve conduction studies.

Dr. Garcia holds medical licenses in Louisiana, Virginia, Georgia and Florida. She is board certified with the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.

Dr. Serrano also joins both hospitals as a neurologist. Most recently, Dr. Serrano completed a residency in Neurology at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, Georgia, followed by subspecialty training in Neurophysiology with an emphasis in Epilepsy including epilepsy surgery evaluation in children and adults with intractable seizures.

Prior to his residency, Dr. Serrano served for four years as a medical officer in the Navy and during that time he was deployed multiple times to the Pacific. He was also deployed to Iraq for ten months serving as the Medical Department Head and only physician on a fast combat support ship assigned to the Lincoln Battle Group in the Persian Gulf as a part of Operations Enduring and Iraqi Freedom.

Dr. Serrano was born and raised in Puerto Rico and attended the University of Florida in Gainesville. He graduated from UF with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry and returned to Puerto Rico to attend medical school at the University of Puerto Rico.

He received his M.D. in 1998 and, as he had enrolled in the Navy, served his internship at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. He holds medical licenses in Florida, Georgia and Louisiana. He is Board Certified with the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He has interests in general neurology including seizure disorders.
