   Emergency Department

In Case of Emergency

In an emergency, the thing that matters most is getting the best care as fast as possible. Hiaeah's Emergency Department is a full-service, acute-care unit that offers treatment 24 hours a day/ 7 days a week.

A Caring Team

A  team of healthcare professionals trained in emergency medicine, including certified emergency physicians, and trained emergency nurses and technicians, staff the unit. Our goal is to treat every patient as we would our own family members.

Fast Track Care

In order to provide the fastest care possible, we use a Fast Track system.  Fast Track classifies each patient according to the nature of their emergency. A Triage Nurse assesses each patient and determines the severity of his or her condition. Patients are seen based on the triage level they received.

The 5 Triage Levels

Level 1: Resuscitation – Patient is unconscious or not breathing. The highest level of care includes cardiopulmonary arrest or trauma-related issues.

Level 2: Emergent – Patient needs rapid intervention. Can include chest pain, acute asthma, a recent neurological impairment, or severe pain.

Level 3: Urgent – Condition that can progress if not treated in a timely manner. Conditions can include shortness of breath or respiratory problems.

Level 4: Semi-Urgent – Patient has a chronic condition such as chronic gastro/intestinal problems.

Level 5: Non-Urgent – Patient has a mild injury or complaint of an illness such as a cough. These patients are treated and are asked to refer to their personal physician or community health center for follow-up.

Special Consideration:  Care For Expectant Mothers

At Hialeah, pregnant women can find the care they need if an emergency arises. We provide bedside monitoring, and a certified obstetrician is on-site to consult for women who are 32 weeks or more along.
