Patient Care With Older Adults In Mind
Free online referral to a physician
A long hospital stay can present serious risks for seniors, including increased incidences of urinary tract infections, development of pressure sores, and functional decline. For this reason, Hialeah Hospital has opened its Acute Care for the Elderly (ACE) Unit for older adults.
The Team
The ACE Unit consists of an interdisciplinary team of specialists that include physicians, nurses, dieticians, therapists, social workers and pharmacists trained to care for the special needs of older adults. The team incorporates protocols for care and treatment that are specific for these patients.
The Goal
The ACE Unit is available to treat acute medical conditions ranging from stroke recovery to pain management. The unit implements the latest techniques in geriatric acute care, which are designed to reduce the risk of developing complications. Specialized treatment helps older adults regain and maintain good function and reduce their hospital stay.
The program focuses on:
- Decreasing the risk for potential infections
- Dietary needs
- Maintaining skin integrity
- Family involvement
- Keeping patients mobile and engaged to maintain function.
This means patients pend less time in bed and more time walking and socializing. They also are encouraged to keep up with as many daily activities as possible
